A playful experiment with meaning and symbols.
Using the icon-generating program I created (here), participants who came to my studio in January 2020 generated digital symbols and then painted them by hand on 6 x 6 in. canvases.
Each generated symbol was also randomly assigned a title from a list of 400 verbs such as “slip,” “break,” “tiptoe,” or “compare.” The combination of the symbol and the title created the 37 unique icons represented in the piece.
As there are over 13 million available combinations of symbols and titles, no icon is repeated in this project. However, some titles are repeated and some symbols are repeated.
